Dundas St Construction

What work will be happening?

This project is focused on improving the quality and reliability of the water, sewer and road along Dundas St from Quebec St to McCormick Blvd. Watermains and water services up to the property line will be replaced, as well as private drain improvements, where requested. Road construction including curbs, gutters and sidewalks will also be replaced. Bre-Ex Construction Inc. is the contractor for this project.

The project includes:

  • replacement of sanitary sewers and services;
  • replacement of storm sewers;
  • replacement of watermain and water services;
  • new traffic signals at Dundas Street/Quebec Street and at Dundas Street/Egerton Street;
  • full road reconstruction, including new asphalt, curb and gutter, sidewalks;
  • landscaping improvements including tree plantings along the north side of Dundas Street;
  • bicycle lane connection on Dundas between Quebec Street and Egerton Street.

The sanitary and storm sewers were installed in 1914-1915 and the watermains were installed in 1905 and 1913. All of this infrastructure has reached the end of its life expectancy. Once this project is completed, several other sewer projects south of Dundas St that feed to the Burbrook trunk sewer will be able to procceed.

The budget for the whole project is $8,497,392.

How will this affect Dundas St and surrounding neighbourhoods?

This is a major construction project on a key arterial road that usually carries ~21,000 vehicles per day and serves two bus routes.

Between April 24 and late Fall 2017, different segments of Dundas St will be closed during the project. Local businesses will still be open.

Work will typically be completed during the hours of 7am to 7pm, Monday to Friday, with potential circumstances where work outside of these hours will need to occur.

In October 2016 a letter to affected homeowners, residents and businesses in the area was sent to provide notification of the extent of the work being planned. There was also additional details including a public meeting that was held in November and information regarding the option of private drain connection replacement. More information is available in the notice of construction letter.

I will keep this page updated as the project progresses.

How can I help to mitigate the impacts of construction?

  1. Please consider making special efforts to support the businesses on Dundas St and in the surrounding area during construction as a customer and promoter. Old East Village has a great tradition of supporting local businesses!
  2. If you are travelling via a detour, please keep the residents who live on adjoining streets in mind.

If you have ideas about how to help on this front, please get in touch with me or with Jen Pastorius at the Old East Village BIA.
